Philosophy from the Big House – Book Publication
This was a project that was initiated by the prisoners that were participating in the Philosophy in Prisons enhancement class. Part of the discussion was about ‘how do you write a book?’. This was then turned into a possible project whereby, the learners with the help of Niamh and Gary as tutors put together a proposal to write a book collectively that would capture the nature of the course and the topics that had been explored in the learning sessions. It was a very exciting project where the structure, content and possible distribution was all decided in a democratic manner.
The book is a combination of essays from prisoners, academics who were part of the “Professors in Prison’ project, and the tutors Niamh and Gary. Liverpool Hope University kindly published the book and the prisoners decided that the book should be free and available to those who wouldn’t necessarily have the disposable income to buy books. They also wanted Gary and Niamh to place it discretely in mainstream bookstores so people would pick up the book unintentionally. The prisoners also were keen that their book would share the shelves of renowned philosophers such as Fredrick Nietzsche and Baruch Spinoza! This involved Niamh and Gary delivering the book to the museums of such philosophers and placing the book among the seminal works of the philosophers.
