New Starts, Prison Arts Symposium – 2023

This symposium explores how three institutions, Liverpool Hope University, Novus and TATE Liverpool, can work together towards a shared goal, enabling projects to take place through a collaboration based on support, sharing of expertise and resources. The role of applied arts in the criminal justice system is not only recognised for the educational benefits it brings but also how exploring the arts can significantly enhance prisoners’ wellbeing. This symposium will present a catalogue of approaches to using the arts in prison education, celebrating some of the best practices/projects that are happening nationally in the UK. We hope that this will contribute to the rich tapestry of practices that have gone before us, are being delivered currently, and all the future artistic projects that hover in a state of anticipation. The discussions today, the projects, demonstrations and workshops, are brought together as a resource to inspire, influence and inform the best practices of the future
